6:00 am on a cool December morning, I make my way to the living room. I sit in the stillness. Enjoying the glow from the Christmas tree as it lights up the quiet room. I calm my heart and my mind. I meditate on who He is. What He has done. And what He continues to do.
Advent is the season of the year leading up to Christmas. The word advent itself means “arrival” or “an appearing or coming into place.” Christmas is the celebration of the arrival of Jesus here on earth.
The Advent Season is highly ritualized by many religions. As a Christian, I love to do specific studies during the month of December to quiet my heart and mind during such a busy time of year. As you begin an advent study you are preparing your heart to celebrate his birth, but also the anticipation of his second coming. Of course, Jesus should be honored and worshipped all year long for who He is, but December is a great time to create space in your daily routine for some special time with you Savior.
Advent: 25 days with Jesus – This book is written by a sweet lady in our church, Diane Cotton. She is gifted in teaching the Word of God and is a great author.
The Wonder of Advent – This is an absolutely beautiful study. It can be done as a group study but is also adaptable to be done alone. It is filled with songs, recipes, and reflection questions.
Unwrapping the names of Jesus – This book focuses on who Jesus is and allows you space to sit in wonder of the Savior.
Hidden Christmas– This is not structured as a daily devotional but is packed full of knowledge that will both blow your mind and fill your heart with adoration.
Emmanuel: An invitation to prepare him room at Christmas and always – Another beautiful study with a great theme throughout.
Come let us adore him – I have not personally read this one but have heard great things from several people.
No matter where you are with your faith, I pray that you take time this Christmas to explore Jesus. Learn more about Him. Learn His character. Become more like Him. I challenge you to team up with a friend or two, pick out a study and enjoy Jesus together. Share what He is teaching you during the Christmas season. Slow down and let the beauty of salvation overwhelm your heart.
I will be sharing a kid’s Advent post tomorrow. It is packed with devotionals and fun calendars. Don’t miss it!
