Routines are so important to me. I can waste so much time if I decide to go against my routine. There is certainly times to throw the schedule out the window and just enjoy being together but that does not work as a way to live. For me at least, I desire the structure. So today, I’ll share our morning routine. First, my personal routine. Then my kids’ morning baskets.
Morning Block - 6:00 - 8:30
I’ve talked before on how much I love a block schedule. You can read about our fall block schedule here. With the block schedule, you have the flexibility to move your blocks around but when you enter a specific block, everyone knows what is expected. This morning block is specific to our home school days. The days my daughter is at the school, we leave pretty early and then I head to the gym and then the church for Bible study or our mom groups.
6:00 – Mama wakes
I get dressed into workout clothes, wash my face, brush my teeth, and take my thyroid medicine. Then I make my way to the couch for my morning quiet time. I can definitely feel the difference when this does not happen. If time allows and the kids are still sleeping, I do some morning stretches and ab work.
7:00 – Kids wake up
They wake up between 7:00 and 7:30 every day and pretty much want to eat the moment they get up. So I start the breakfast routine and make sure we are dressed and ready for the day.
8:00 – Morning Baskets
8:30 – Leave for the gym
This is a process. The shoes, the snacks, fill up water bottles, do the hair… all of the things. We end up on our way around 8:45 and spend a good two hours at the gym. The kids have fun classes and play with their friends. I work out and then spend some time at the cafe typing up blog posts.
Kid's morning routine - The morning basket
This is a new routine that we are starting with the school year. Both my kids are doers and by the time we leave for the gym the house is already destroyed with every toy we own spread around the house. At least, that’s how I feel. The idea behind the morning basket is that they will have focused activities to keep them occupied while I get the day rolling. I start their basket with them as we read our morning devotionals and then they have tasks that keep them busy while I clean up the kitchen and get things ready to go. I have a 19 month old and a five year old but the morning basket is beneficial for any age group. My prayer is that they will begin a habit of having focused quiet time in the morning that will follow them the rest of their life. Meet with Jesus. Get your mind + spirit right for the day. Then you are ready for whatever the day brings.
what's in the basket?
The contents of the basket will be changed up probably weekly to some extent. But the main structure of the basket will stay the same. I am excited about all the possibilities for this basket. I plan to have special activities for holidays and specific themes that we are studying. This is just another way to add some fun to the day to day.
My 5 year old’s morning basket:
- Daily Devotional
- Gratitude Journal
- Handwriting Practice
- Math Activities
- Books
- Weekly Memory Verse
- Learning Clock
My toddler’s morning basket:
- Storybook Bible
- Board Books
- Flash Cards
- Hands on Activities (animals, blocks, shape shorting, etc…)
I have a post coming about specific hands on activities for toddlers so stay tuned for that. Please let me know if you have any questions. What morning routine works for you and your family? Is there anything new from this post that you plan to incorporate? Let me know below.
