Hybrid Kindergarten + Fall Block Schedule
My first born started Kindergarten last week. She will be 6 in November and was beyond ready. After much research and prayer we have decided to put her in a private Christian school. It is a university model school and she attends school on site Tuesday + Thursday and I teach her at home on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It’s the best of both worlds. I have loved being involved in her education so far and would love for that to continue for as long as it makes sense. With the hybrid option, the school provides the curriculum and you work in tandem with their teacher. I am excited to see how the year goes. I’ll keep you updated. Our block schedule has helped the transition be easy and doable. We love it!
Why I chose the university model for kindergarten
- I am able to stay involved in her education on a daily basis.
- I have the support of her teacher and all the curriculum is provided.
- She will be able to enjoy all the fun that school has to offer. Friends, field trips, holiday parties, all the fun.
- We will have the freedom to supplement with extracurricular courses.
- The hybrid schedule allows more family time and flexibility in our schedule.
our Fall Block Schedule
I love a block schedule. It helps free my brain so much and it prevents me from hyper focusing on one area and allows me to be productive in all areas. I shared more details on how I get things done as a stay at home mom in this post.
We will see how things go and adapt as needed. I want to find the balance between structure, discipline and discipling my children but also providing them with space to run wild and free and enjoy their childhood. I also think that a lot of this depends on your child. My daughter feels loved my one on one activity time. Whether it is school work, painting together or even organizing her closet. She longs for that time together focused on a task.
Lucy's Schedule
We have had this basic schedule for a while. At least for the morning blocks, so we shall see how well the more structured afternoon goes. Lucy has a schedule for our home days and then a separate one for her at school days. Having the schedule written out sets expectations and holds us both accountable.
Extracurricular Activities
I am adding extracurricular activities for our at home days.
Monday – typing This is a new activity for my daughter and I am interested to see how she does. We are doing free lessons through typingclub.com.
Wednesday – piano. I took piano for many years and kind of hit a wall. I think piano is a mixture of knowledge and talent and I lacked the talent side… I’ll be honest I probably could have worked harder as well but it certainly did not come easily for me. All that being said, I know enough about reading music to teach my daughter the basics. She is catching on quickly and when she conquers what I can teach her then we will sign her up for some lessons.
Friday- watercolor painting. Lucy loves to paint. I love to paint too. We love to paint together. So I found this course that we will do together. I am pretty excited about this to be honest.
I would love my children to find some hobbies that they love and enjoy doing. I want to create avenues of perfecting a skill and the pride of working towards a project. The day feels busy when I write it all down like this. And some days, not everything gets done and that’s fine. But the truth is, we love doing all these things, minus the chores perhaps but those are neccessary. I go into detail about our morning routine and the kid’s morning baskets here, as well as, a post about our quiet time. Be sure to read those.
What are some activities that you and your family love doing together? Do you have a general schedule that you follow on a daily basis?
