Detoxing My Life: bathroom (part 1)
There is a shift happening. Have you felt it? The world is realizing that most of what is sold in stores for us to consume or put on our bodies every single day is packed full of toxins.
I always felt ‘crunchy’ living was too fussy for me. It seemed high maintenance. I mean, how bad could all this stuff really be if everyone is using it?!
Turns out really REEEAALYY bad.
So here I am, starting at square one. I would venture to say that 90% of what we use in my home is bad for you. I have been on quite the health journey over the last several years and it has been an uphill battle. I feel awful. Low energy. Overweight. All the things. The more that I learn about all these toxins, the more upset I get. Why are we just trusting all these mainstream products?
Although, I am not an expert, the process of detoxing my life has to start somewhere. So wherever you are on your journey to clean up your life, I hope you join me. Let’s learn from each other.
My first project: the bathroom
The bathroom seemed like the easiest because I don’t use a ton of products. Plus, these products are ones that I use on the daily and use all over so it seems that it would make a pretty big impact.
And if you’re at a loss for what is good and what is not, you are not alone. Trust me. All the information out there is very overwhelming. I found the YUKA app. You can scan any barcode and it will tell you about each of the ingredients, rate the product, and give additional recommendations.
Toxins hiding in your bathroom products
DEA, MEA + TEA are all hiding in your face wash, shampoo, body wash etc. They interrupt your hormones put you at risk for cancer and organ toxicity. Triclosan is added to bath and shower products for their antibacterial properties and claim to get you squeaky clean. But it has been linked to skin cancer and hormonal imbalances. And it’s definitely something to avoid.
There are over 10,000 ingredients used in cosmetic and personal care products. Only 13% of them have been reviewed for safety by the CIR Panel. An average American woman puts over 168 chemicals on her body each day and many of those chemicals are linked to cancer, infertility, miscarriage, obesity and on the list goes.
In the last 6 months I have changed all of the products that I use in the bathroom. There are more and more clean products coming to the market. But it is also important to note that just because a company says they’re clean, you can’t always take their word for it. Always check the ingredients.
